New Suez Flare Up. Major missing after ambush. Troops clash with Egyptian Police.Six Mauritians were killed, one British major is missing presumed killed, and one Royal Engineer is missing after an ambush of military vehicles outside the town of Suez yesterday. A clash developed between civil police and British troops in the same area, and a number of Egyptians were killed. A British soldier was wounded. In a third incident a British Military policeman was shot in the back and killed.Shot in Back. The firing in this incident was heard by the Assistant Provost Marshal of Suez who was returning from the British Consulate with an escort of Royal Military Police. He stopped his car to speak to an Egyptian police officer. An Egyptian policeman then deliberately shot a Royal Military Policeman in the back.16 Egyptians including two policemen were killed in the clashes with the troops. Sixty Eight Egyptians were wounded including 13 police.Extract from the Bristol Evening World, 4 December 1951.Suez victim was a Bristol Cadet - Death roll now eleven. British troops to-day blocked all roads into Suez, where three British soldiers - one of them a former Bristol police cadet - and wight Mauritians were killed yesterday by terrorists.The British victims were L/cpl Michael Roland Foxwell, who joined the Army last December after two years as a Bristol police cadet; a major and a Sapper warrant officer. L/Cpl Foxwell's mother lives at 56 South Road, Weston super Mare. A telegram yesterday told her that her son in the Military Police, was seriously injured with gunshot wounds. To-day a second wire reported his death. The Major and warrant officer were both missing after last night's clashes. Both were found dead to-day. The major had been shot through the chest. Two more Mauritian soldiers found dead at the scene of the fighting brought the number of Mauritian victims to eight. Another clash broke out in Suez to-day when Egyptians fire on British troops. Two British soldiers were wounded and about 20 Egyptian civilians and police were either killed or wounded.Prisoners Questioned. Brigadier Greenacre, British commander of the Suez Garrison was meeting the Governor of Suez to-day to discuss incidents. Twenty five Egyptian prisoners in British hands are being interrogated in an effort to ascertain what part they played in yesterday's battle. There had bee one encouraging incident when a British Army lorry missing after artillery exercises in the desert, had been escorted to safety by Egyptians., The lorry driver had lost his bearings.The spokesman said that the Egyptian policeman who shot L/Cpl Foxwell in the back had done so despite the disapproval of other police near by. Michael Foxwell was to-day described by his ex-colleagues in the Bristol police as "one of the most popular cadets in the Bristol Force." He ws an all-round athlete, a member of Bristol South Harriers and the reigning Somerset junior mile champion. His death has come as a severe shock to his colleagues in the Bristol Police Force, athletes all over the city and members of the Bristol Spelaeological Society, for Foxwell was also a keen Mendip caving enthusiast. Michael Foxwell was born in Weston-super-Mare. For a time he lived at Congresbury. At Weston Grammar School he was a member of the 2nd Rugby XV and a fine cross country runner. He became a police cadet in October, 1928 and was a popular member of the administrative staff at Bridwell. He was a keen boxer and wrestler and took part in all the police sports.
