He volunteered in May 1915, and after training proceeded to France in August the same year. He did good service in many forward areas on that front, and in the Ypres sector, near Loos and St. Elois, in the Somme and Ancre regions and about Lens and Bullecourt. Following up the advance of 1918 he did service in Bapaume, Cambrai and Le Cateau, and after the Armistice was demobilised in August 1919.
