He volunteered at the outbreak of war and was sent to the Dardanelles in the following year. He fought at the landing a Suvla Bay, and subsequent engagements until the Evacuation of the Peninsula. He then proceeded to Palestine and was engaged in the operations at Gaza and Mejde. Later, drafted to the Western Front, he served on important duties until the cessation of hostilities. He was demobilised in July 1919 and holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.
