He Volunteered in May 1915 and in the same year was drafted to the Western Front. There he played a prominent part in many engagements, including the battles of Loos, and the heavy fighting at Bethune. He served in France until after the cessation of hostilities and was demobilised in July 1919. He holds the 1914-1915 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.
