He was already in the Army when war broke out in August 1914 and was immediately drafted to the Western Front but was wounded in action and taken prisoner at the Battle of Mons. Whilst in captivity in Germany he suffered many hardships. After hostilities ceased he was repatriated, returning home and in 1920 was still in the Army.
