He joined in February 1917 and first saw service in France at Ypres, but was then transferred to Italy. In this seat of operations he took an active part in fighting on the Piave River and the Asiago Plateau. After the Armistice he served with the Army of Occupation in Austria and later was sent to Egypt for important duties in Cairo. He did good work and was demobilised in April 1920 holding the General Service and Victory Medals.
