A Bowes, MFP. Extract from the Aldershot News 26 July 1907. POACHING ON GOVERNMENT GROUND. Albert Thomas Johnson, Thomas Cheers, and Edward Rees were charged with day poaching on 18th July, at Farnborough. All denied the charge. Sergeant W. J. Broadhurst, Military Mounted Police, at 10 a.m. on 18th, at Puckridge Hill, saw defendants with a dog coming across Laffan's Plain, Their pockets appeared bulky and two of them went to arrest the defendants, who made off. Johnson used bad language. Lees had several nets in his possession. while Johnson escaped. He never saw the men doing anything in the camp. The other men had rabbits. Corporal Millikin, Military Mounted Police corroborated. he saw the men on the north side of the canal. near Farnborough Road, coming towards Aldershot from Fleet direction. Cheers had eight small and four large rabbits on him. Two of them were alive. Witness: We have to arrest the men to get their names at the station. Mr Robertson; You have no right to do so, and you do it at your own risk. Johnson admitted poaching but not on Government ground. He was not on government ground but by the canal bank. They were poaching at Ewshott. The Bench after consultation convicted the defendants. Nothing was known of the men, who were fined 10-6d each or 14 days hard labour. |
