On many occasions prior to and during attacks, he went over ground which was being heavily shelled, posting his men at various points of vantage, and bringing down prisoners, collecting stragglers, and guiding walking wounded. During a congestion of traffic, caused by hostile shells as troops were passing, he took control, guided troops forward, cleared away the dead and wounded, and repaired the damage, so that the traffic was delayed for fifteen minutes only.
