William Thomas Belcher. Statement found in Court Martial Documents of 29918 Cpl Arthur Russell, 3 Reserve Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. No. 8026 L/Cpl W T Belcher, Military Foot Police, being called, states:- At Broadwater Forest, Tunbridge Wells, about 21.35 on 17th December 1918, in company with Cpl Adams (4244) and L/Cpl Johnson MFP I visited the Broadwater Forest Magazine Guard Room with Cpl Adams and L/Cpl Johnson. I saw the accused, No. 29918 Cpl A Russel, whom I now identify, and who came forward when Cpl Adams asked for the NCO in charge of the Guard. I also saw four Private soldiers in the Guard Room, and there was a female who, I saw lying in bed neat the door. I heard Cpl Adams ask the accused what the female was doing in the Guard Room. He replied that she came crying at the door and said she was starving, and he took pity on her and allowed her to sit by the fire. I heard Cpl Adams tell the female to go home. I also heard Cpl Adams ask the accused by his sentry was not posted and he replied that he was changing the guard. As I entered the Guard Room, I notice that the accused was not wearing his tunic. I saw Cpl Adams hand over the accused to Sgt Carrol. William Thomas Belcher. |
