Extract from the Chelmsford Chronicle, 1/6/1934. Tailor & Policeman.
At Cochester on Tuesday, Gwilyn James Davis, 37, a tailor, of Maidenburgh street, was summoned for being found hawking on War department land (AbbeyFields), after having been warned by Lance Corporal Blofield, of the Military Foot Police. He was further summond for assaulting Blofield. Lance Corporal Blofield said on May 19 he was in plain clothes in Circular Road, when he saw defendant enter a barrack room in Sobraon Barracks. After he left witness asked him if he had a pass, and defendant replied "No." Witness then warned him off military land. On May 20 he again saw defendant on the abbey Fields, with a perambulator and a little boy. Davis sold some pastry to some soldiers, and was about to move away when witness called, "Davis, come here." Defendant thereupon drew a large sheaf knife, at the same time declaring "Ill stab you, you ----, I have stabbed many a German, I might as well die for a sheep as a lamb." Witness called to two soldiers for assistance, and defendant was taken to the guardroom of the Goojerat Barracks. Davis was fined 10/- in the first case, and in the second he was bound over for six months, and ordered to pay 4/- costs.
