Police Sergeant Harry Cecil Bridge, who for a number of years has been the senior Sergeant in Newmarket, retired on superannuation at the end of March, after over 26 years service in the West Suffolk Constabulary. A native of Hawkedon, Suffolk Mr Bridge joined the Force at Bury St Edmund's on March 1st, 1912, and was transferred in December of the same year to Sudbury, where he served under Inspector Herbert Reeve, who late became Superintendent in charge of the Newmarket division. His first period of service in Newmarket began in January 1914. Early in the war he was attested, but it was not until February, 16th 1917, that he was released for military service. He was the an officer of Military Foot Police until October, 1919, when he returned to civilian police duty, first at Bury St Edmund's and then successively, Barnigham and Walsham le willows, In the latter village he served as Sergeant for three years, and then in 1919, was sent back as Sergeant to Newmarket Station where he completed his service and will live in retirement. |
