Extract from the Staffordshire Sentinel 20 May 1937. POLICE CONSTABLE BYATT. Newcastle Officer to Retire after 26 years' Service.
At the meeting of the Newcastle Watch Committee, Police Constable Byatt was the recipient of the King's Coronation Medal, which was handed to him by the Deputy Mayor (Alderman J. Bentley), who presided.
The Committee also granted Po0lice Constable Byatt's application for permission to retire on pension on completion to 26 years' service, on July 15th next.
The Chief Constable (Mr. W. Bate) reported that Police Constable Byatt had completed his service without default. he had been on active service during the War from November, 1915 to May, 1919 and had a rough time in Mesopotamia.
The Chairman congratulated Police Constable Byatt on the receipt of the Coronation Medal, and also on his excellent record of service with the police force and the Mayor )Alderman S. Myott), who added his congratulations, expressed good wishes for Police Constable Bryatt's future.
Police Constable Byatt was born at Smallthorne and joined the Newcastle Borough Police Force under Chief Constable Ingram, having served when the present Chief Constable was a constable. He joined the Staffordshire Yeomanry during the Great War, but was transferred to the Military Mounted Police and served in Egypt, Mesopotamia and India. He has served in the Newcastle Force under four chief constables.
