Notes:MFP. Boulogne. From Guilford, later Merrow. Later Sgt. Awarded the 1914 Star, Victory and War Medals. First served abroad (1) France, 13/10/1914. This statement was found in a Court of Inquiry at No. 2 Camp, St Pol, Dunkirk into the circumstances surrounding the death by drowning of No. 377779 Pte. J Caldwell, 769 Area Employment Company. 4th Evidence. No.1265, A/Sgt William Styles, Military Foot Police, Dunkirk, states:- Between 7.30 am and 8.00 am on 21st November 1918 I received a telephone message from No. 9558 L/Cpl H W Smith that he seen a body of a British soldier floating in the dock, near Quai de la Citadelle I at once proceeded there by bicycle and on reaching the place I assisted No. 9558 Lance Corporal H W Smith, and a French policeman to recover the body. We then placed it upon the Quai. I searched the body and found the following:- 1 AB 64 bearing No. 37779 Pte. J Caldwell No. 769 Area Employment Company, 1 shilling Postal Order, 2 French 15 centimes in French money, 2 postcards and 1 webbing belt. All of which I produce before the Court. I telephone the SMO Office for an ambulance which conveyed the body to the Mortuary, Queen Alexandra Hospital. Petite Synthe. Signed 1265 A/Sgt W Styles, MF Police.
