LOCAL SOLDIER MENTIONED. - We are pleased to learn that Sgt. William Smith of the Military Foot Police, who was formerly in the Sheffield City Police Force, and who resided at 713 City Road, has been mentioned in dispatches for good service in France. Sgt. Smith is well known and respected in this district. Prior to joining the Sheffield Police Force he worked at Woodthorpe Colliery. He was a good athlete, and assisted Intake clubs in both cricket and football matches, and was very popular.

WAR HONOUR - Many letters have been received by the choir secretary of the Gleadless Congregational Church from soldiers and sailors in response to the postal orders and the good wishes sent out to them from the choir and friends connected with the church. On in particular, which has just arrived from Sergt. Wm. Smith is worthy of mention. Sgt. Smith, who is in the Military Foot Police and who prior to enlistment was a member of the Sheffield Police Force, had done exceptionally good service since he enlisted and is now acting as chief clerk in the APM's office, Abbeville Area, France. He says: "I am greatly indebted to the members of the church for their kindness to me. I appreciate it, and than the and sincerely hope that in the near future the boys who are spared will soon be home again, Those who have given their lives for our country, we ask God to protect and take care of those near and dear to them. You will be pleased to hear that I have just been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for good work in the field. In the olden days the boys of the Congregational Chapel used to fight for football medals, now we are getting them in the field."
