Citation: Military Medal Citation.North AfricaAt Wadi Akarit at about 1700hours on 6 April 1943 he showed great initiative and disregard for personal safety. He had been sent forward with a detachment from 113 Provost Company under Lt Richards to organise traffic control for the passage of operational traffic through the enemy minefields. Lance Corporal Bunce was posted near the anti-tank ditch to assist traffic moving in both directions. Shelling was in progress at the time. He was instructed to carry out his duties but to take cover if shelling became heavy. Later very heavy shellfire was concentrated on the spot where Lance Corporal Bunce and another Lance Corporal were posted. In spite of being authorised to take cover Lance Corporal Bunce continued to direct traffic standing upright under intense fire, thereby showing great courage and initiative. He was struck on the shoulder blade by a piece of rock from a shell burst but remained on duty at his own request. His steadiness and devotion to duty was an example to those about him and undoubtedly assisted the flow of traffic which might easily have become confused.Recommended for MM by Lt Col D Melville APM 30 Corps.
