Notes: | MMP. From Leicester. Awarded the 1915 Star, Victory and War Medals. First served abroad (1) France, 28/7/1915 to 7/5/1916 and 24/2/1917 to 11/11/1918. Discharged class Z reserve 1/8/1919. Later A/Sgt. 5/7/1919 he is shown as being given £2 on the Crystal Palace Demobilization Acquittance Roll. Extract from the Leicestershire Evening Mail 22 January 1920. Police Promotion. Three constables, William Matthews, Whyman (of Aylstone, sub-division) and Thornton have been raised to the rank of patrol-sergeants, Thornton served in France during the war, joining the Military Mounted Police in April 1915. That he shone in this role is proved by the fact that he won the Military Medal and bar. Previous to joining the Army he was a constable in the aliens, hackney carriages and summoning offices: on his return from the war he was put in the Detective Dept., and now has bee promoted from there. |
