MILITARY POLICE ON ACTIVE SERVICE.
The group portrait which appears on this page represent a detachment of Policemen who are with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. The portrait has been sent to us by PC Horace Giles, of Great Grimsby who is now a Corporal in the Military Foot Police.
PC Giles, who wrote in the middle of March says: "Corporal Biss and myself came out and have been together ever since. I am pleased to say we get along together A1. He, of course belongs to Newport Borough, and I, as you know Grimsby Borough. I am so glad that our Force hods such a fine record. It want a bit of beating for recruiting considering its size. I am also glad to say that I got my parcel all right from our worthy Chief Constable, Officers and men, which I can assure you came in very hand. I should love to see a bit of snow here, but there, never mind, let us all hope for the best and trust that I shall able to return some day and settle down to duty again. I am sure that it is most kind of our Chief to look after us, and I can only wish him good health an long life."
In another letter PC Giles thanks us for sending him some copies of "On and off duty," and a little book called "On the March." He says: "I am on the desert, and find it very lonesome at times. The heat and flies do bit so that it takes all our time to brush them away. I hope that this year will bring forth an honourable peace and so we can settle down again to our old duties. I find it somewhat more difficult than in peace time, but we must hope for the best.. PC Giles encloses with his letter a smaller portrait group which we are not able to reproduce. In this is seen Corporal M Creed, of Manchester, Corporal Heath , of Lancashire , and Corporal J Pearce, Metro Police.
