Decoration: Military Medal (London Gazette: 34893 Page: 4265 July 11, 1940)
Citation: Military Medal Citation. BEF France & Flanders. On 23 May 1940 at Douain he showed great coolness and courage in the face of enemy tanks and air attacks, having been forced with 2 other men to take cover in a building from enemy tanks he decided to fetch assistance. Under heavy fire he recovered his motor cycle from a ditch and rode to a nearby brick kiln where he expected to find our troops. Failing to find them he rode back and conveyed the other two men in turn on the pillion of his motorcycle to a place of safety from which they later rejoined our troops. All this was done under continuous fire. Recommended for MM by the Commander of 50 Division. National Archive WO 373/15.
