A letter in his Army Records dated 4/11/1915 from PM's Office, Aldershot states: Sir, In reply to your letter of the 2nd instant, applying to re-join the Corps of Military Foot Police, i have to inform you that owing to instructions having been received from the War Office that the permanent Military Police are not to be superseded by re-enlisted NCO's, therefore I cannot accept you in the rank you previously held, and the highest tank I am allowed to offer is that of Lance Corporal without pay.
