Citation: | New Year Honour. 385010 Major Joseph Birks, 1 Corps Signals Pro Coy RMP/TA. July 1956 to July 1961.Citation: Major Birks was the Permanent Staff Officer of 1 Corps Pro Sigs Coy during the Suez crisis and was made responsible for all communications covering the South Wales Ports and did a remarkably fine job of work. While he was PSO of this unit he raised it to such a peak that it was sufficiently operational to take to war without further training. When he gave up his extended service commission to take a job with a civilian firm he straight way volunteered to serve on in a TA capacity and very soon after this became Commanding Officer of the Company. Not only has he kept this Unit up to its very high standard but he has doubled its numbers and made it in to an absolutely shown piece Company in the Area. In his capacity of Director of his firm he has done much more than could be reasonably expected o him to promote the interest of the TA and regular army in the district and one can quite truthfully say that he spends a major portion of his leisure time in promoting good will towards the regular and TA Armies and I cannot recommend him strongly enough. In all respects both in civil life and in his military duties he has shown himself to be outstanding.Recommended by: APM Western Command. Chief of Staff, Western Command. GOC Western Command. |
