Citation: | Citation: On the 4 March 45 during the entrance of 17 Indian Div to MEIKTILA Capt BONNY was leading the Pro Recce party to sign and take over the town. Many snipers still existed in bunkers and the monsoon drains, and sniping was going on. On arrival at a causeway which was the only existing route to the area in which the div was to be situated, Capt BONNY noticed that the road had been mined and booby trapped. As the time factor was most important and sending back for organised sapper party would only have delayed the movement, he without any hesitation started clearing the mines and disconnecting the booby traps. Having done this, the recce elements advanced until they reached a bridge which had to be crossed. Here again it was discovered that aerial bombs had been placed under the bridge. Once again without any regard for his personal safety, Capt BONNY helped to remove the fuses from these bombs thus allowing the move of the remainder of the div to continue with the least possible delay. The immediate action taken by this officer, who has no technical knowledge of dealing with mines, and booby traps, set an high example to the men under his command and ensured the free movement of the div forward without any further delay and possible loss of life. this officer has commanded the Div Pro Unit since Sept, 42; throughout the operations in TIDDIM, IMPHAL and Central BURMA he has consistently proved himself to be a courageous leader of his unit and has always been most evident organising and encouraging his extended CMP posts.Recommended by APM 17 Indian Div, Maj W W Littleboy, Maj Gen D Tennant Cowan, Commander 17 Indian Division and Lt Gen F W Messervy, Commander 4 Corps. |
