Citation: | Queens Birthday Honours. 22818913 Staff Sergeant (Acting) Roy Joseph Baldwin, 1st Regiment, RMP.Citation: Staff Sergeant Baldwin has been unit MT NCO since January 1970. During that time he has been totally responsible for the efficient running of the unit transport which now amounts to eighty-seven vehicles. He has maintained a truly excellent standard in the face of the most daunting difficulties. Day after day vehicles have been returned to him with every tyre punctured, windscreens smashed body work damaged and all sorts of mechanical defects. With brilliant organisation and dogged determination ha has overcome all these problems and kept the vehicles on the road. Without such devoted service and success of RMP operations in Northern Ireland would have been seriously impaired. He also supervised and controlled the installation of a wide range of radio equipment in the vehicles, made more difficult by the installation of vehicle armour, with practically no disruption of duties: a single and valuable achievement. In addition to his technical duties, he has also carried out a full share of police duties in Belfast, much of it during some of the worst rioting experienced in Northern Ireland. Although forced to act, because of his MT, as either commander of an ad hoc platoon of administrative personnel or relief platoon commander, he set a splendid example to resolution, courage and professional ability which was an inspiration to all. To have carried out duties which would be the most responsibility of a technical quartermaster in most units is a splendid enough achievement, but for over two years Staff Sergeant Baldwin also played a full part in military police operations in Belfast. His outstanding conduct and contribution to the success of operations over such a long period is worthy of high recognition.Recommended by: CO 1 Regt, RMP. CLF Northern Ireland, |
