Decoration Record:
Decoration: Member of the British Empire (London Gazette: 45984 Page: 6487 June 2, 1973)
Citation: Queens Birthday Honours. Major (Acting) George Robert Caird (472395). HQ SIB, BAOR. RMP. January 1971 to date.Citation: As DAPM (SIB) Eastern Area BAOR, an appointment he assumed on 3 Jan 1971 he has been responsible for the direction of SIB enquiries into serious crime committed by military personnel in the 1st British Corps area. He has personally and most successfully taken charge of an involved case of murder, as well as one of manslaughter and other serious crimes. The demands of Northern Ireland for additional SIB investigators has brought about a shortfall in the number normally available within his area of responsibility. He has ensured that there has been no loss in efficiency or lowering of professional standards, by his own example and careful deployment of available manpower. In order to maintain this satisfactory position Major Caird has not spared himself and always uncomplainingly placed his duty before his private life and commitments. He has taken a deep personal interest in the professional efficiency of inexperienced NCOs and has spent much of his own time helping them with their reports. He spearheaded the introduction of training aids in the form of slide, tape presentations in an effort to abate the ever increasing drug problem an devoted a great deal of his won time in assisting units and service schools on the problem of drug abuse. He has organised many performances of the SIB BAOR drug presentations to Garrison, units, wives clubs and schools in his area. During the period Mar - Oct 72, at a time of terrorist activity in Germany, he was the officer personally responsible for the close security protection afforded to seven visiting VIPs including four members of the Royal Family and the Prime Minister. Throughout the period of his present appointment, Major Caird has shown a complete disregard for his own interests, and has unselfishly put into all aspects of his work an amount of zeal and effort far beyond the normal call of duty. He has willingly accepted responsibilities far in excess of that normally expected of an Acting Major. He has set a tremendous example to his officers, WOs, NCOs, and has earned the admiration and respect of various staff officers which has reflected great credit not only on himself but his unit and Corps.Recommended by: APM HQ 1 British Corps. Brig. HQ 1 British Corps.
