MISTAKEN FOR FLAZING WAX MODEL - Postman's Discovery in Garden, - Sherborne Tragedy, Paraffin can near the body. How a Postman saw what the thought was a blazing wax model of a woman in a cottage garden when in reality the"model" was Mrs. Alice may Cheney (56), of Castleton, Sherborne, was told at the inquest on Mrs. Cheney at Sherborne last night. The Coroner, Mr W H Creech, recorded a verdict of Suicide while of Unsound Mind on Mrs. Cheney, wh0 had recently been suffering from Neurasthenia. The postman John Edward Bishop of 29, South Avenue, Sherborne, said he called at the cottage early in the morning with letters and noticed a smell of burning rubber. Going down the path he saw what looked like a wax model. "I took another look at it, but thinking it was a wax model being burned I went along to the next farm." said Bishop. "Feeling a little uneasy I questioned Mr Cheney, the husband, about it and he said he knew nothing about a fire in his garden. Then I went to find out what it was. SMOULDERING MASS. "I found Mrs Cheney lying dead in the garden, Her body was bare except for her stocking. Shen I went to the cottage the first time she was just a smouldering mass." Dr. T McCarthy, of Sherborne, told the coroner that he had known Mrs. Cheney for 25 years. Lately she had suffered from Neurasthenia. On August 13 he found her lying dead in the pathway of her garden. She was quite naked her clothes having been burnt off. The cause of death was shock due to burning. PARRAFIN CAN. Police -Sergeant Taylor of Sherborne, said he found the dead woman lying on the garden path badly burned around the body. There were3 pieces of charred garments close by and further along the path he saw a paraffin can, nearly empty, as well as a bottle which had contained turpentine, Near these two articles were two spent matches, There was no sign of a struggle, and nothing to suggest foul play. A verdict was returned as stated. |
