Decoration Record:
Decoration: Member of the British Empire (London Gazette: 36180 Page: 4212 Sept. 23, 1943)
Citation: North Africa. Citation for MBE: During the Battle of Tunisia from April 22nd to 14 May 1943, the energy and efficiency with which Major Cairns carried out his duties as A.P.M. 5 Corps had a material effect on the success of our operations. Much depended on the speed with which the great mass of transport, both fighting and adminisrative, could be got across the Merjarda and the very limited number of roads and tracks East of Medjez and the success with which this was achieved was largely due to Major Cairns. It was also largely due to his tact and hard work that the difficult problem on controlling the large city of Tunis was effected so smoothly from the time of its capture.Brigadier DA & QMG 5 Corps.
