Citation: | Belgium. Citation for Belgian Chevalier of the Order of Leopold II with Palm & Croix De Guerre 1940 with Palm: In October 1944 during the course of operations to open the ports of GHENT and ANTWERP to Allied shipping 52nd (L) Division was committed to a two-pronged assault of the SCHELDT islands of WALCHEREN and BEVELAND. One arm of this assault entailed sea crossings white the other was dependent solely on a single road axis of very limited capabilities. The success of the operation may largely be attributed to sound planning, co-ordination and supervision of the very complex traffic problems involved. Major WREN, as APM of the Division upon whom the satisfactory solution of the very complicated traffic problems so largely depended, was indefatigable in surmounting all difficulties. his planning was sound and efficient; he obtained the best results from his subordinates by the high standard of example which he set; and he was constantly to be found in forward areas of considerable danger, personally supervising the avoidance and clearance of traffic bottlenecks. As the battle progressed, Major WREN was faced with the further problem of dealing with the evacuation of large numbers of enemy prisoners of war amounting to a total of over ten thousand. The presence of so many enemy prisoners of war in the forward areas might have proved of considerable embarrassment to the forward units had Major WREN not so efficiently organised their rapid evacuation despite the limited resources available.Comd 52 (L) DivisionLieut-Gen G I Thomas Comd 1 Corps Dist.
