In order to preserve and maintain the high standard of efficiency set by Major Campion the first school of its kind has now been formed at the Depot of the Corps of Military Police, where existing members of and prospective transfers to the Special Investigation Branch are sent for an intensive and complete course in criminal law practice and procedure on exact civil Police lines. The courses have been devised and collated by Captain John Granville Ellis, MBE, one of the original officers of the branch from Scotland Yard, who is the chief instructor. He is assisted by Company Sergeant Major S Wilsdon (ex Bacup Borough Police) and Sgt. C J Dawson (Leicester City Police).

Decoration Record:
Decoration: Member of the British Empire (London Gazette: 37151 Page: 3368 June 28, 1945)
Citation: Italy. Citation for MBE: As Officer Commanding 77 Section Special Investigation Branch of the CMP, Captain DAWSON is responsible for all criminal inquiries throughout the Eighth Army. For the period 1 Sept 31 Dec 44 and previously throughout the spring offensive in Italy from the Gustav Line onwards, this officer has conducted a very considerable number of highly intricate and involved investigations, bringing many of them finally to a successful conclusion. His prowess as a criminal investigator in the field is outstanding, particularly in view of the difficult and often hazardous nature of the work and the almost complete lack of the normal scientific aids to police investigation. On 10 Nov 44, FORLI fell to the Eighth Army and Captain DAWSON entered the town with a small detachment. Information had been received that the enemy had committed atrocities on a large scale in the form of mass executions. Although investigation of War Crimes is outside the normal scope of his duties, Captain DAWSON undertook immediate inquiries. His work on FORLI airfield, carrious out with relentless tenacity under the most nauseating and appalling conditions made a great impression on the civilian population, to the general benefit of British Military Administration. By his acumen, the application and thoughtful employment of his men, and above all by his own personal untiring example, he has not only brought a great number of military and civilian delinquents to justice, but has overcome the great administrative difficulties affecting his small unit that might well have nullified many of his Section's efforts. The success that has attended the work of his men, has in a very large measure, been due to his own encouragment, leadership, wisdom and guidance.Lt Col J R Archer-Burton OBE.
