Citation: CMP (I). Indian Distinguished Service Medal Citation.Italy The vital task of Indian police patrol on the Divisional maintenance track from CERVARO to CAIRO, and on the ambulance track from PORT LYA to HIGHWAY 6. He had orders to take particulars of vehicles knocked out by shell-fire, to assist drivers pass shelled areas and to police ambulances so that priority against the various traffic circuits would get wounded men back to the M.D.S. in quick time. He preferred to tackle the job alone in his Jeep and for two days and nights, his untiring efforts and personal energy under constant enemy shell-fire, and in appalling weather conditions, undoubtedly assisted the forward movement of food and ammunition, and rearward movement of wounded soldiers from the line.On the 7th February, during this patrol, a Jeep was knocked out by a shell about fifty yards in front of him near VILLA, and whilst on the way to give assistance to the British soldiers in the blazing Jeep, was himself seriously wounded.Havildar Sher Khan, although twice wounded in battles of the Western Desert showed a complete disregard for his personal safety, and was an inspiration to the Indian soldiers of the unit who regard him as a worthy battle veteran.Awarded an immediate IDSM.Recommended by APM 4 Indian Div Maj Cook And Lt Gen B. G Reyerg GOC NZ Corps. National Archive WO 373/6. This was the only IDSM won by CMP (India).
