Extract from Routine Orders by General Sir Herbert C C Plumer, Commanding 2nd Army, dated 19/6/17
No 948 Gallant Conduct. The Army Commander wishes to express his appreciation of the gallant conduct of No P/5073 L/Cpl J Sykes, MFP, under the following circumstances, On June 14 about 2pm a pair of horses drawing a GS wagon bolted. L/Cpl Sykes sprang at their heads and succeeded in stopping them after being dragged some 20 yards along the road. This prompt and plucky action no doubt prevented a serious accident, as there was a large amount of traffic in the vicinity. An entry of this action will be made in the Conduct Sheet of this NCO in accordance with KR para 1919 (XIV).
