Citation: CMP (I).Military Medal Citation. BurmaPLAU, ARAKAN. After the evacuation of the Div HQ Area on 6 February at 17.30hrs this NCO accompanied the OC unit back to the unit lines to assist in the withdrawal of the medium guns. On that occasion he proceeded to the unit MT area to attempt to save a vehicle, although the area was occupied by the enemy; and he only returned when the fire was heavy. On 7 February he proceeded to the centre of the GNAKYEDAUK PASS, with the OC unit and Corporal Ellis, in three carriers. The carriers returned and Lance Corporal Bailey was instructed to remain behind and bring back a party of BOR's (British other ranks) on foot, as the carriers were full. After the departure of the carriers the road was cut by enemy fire between him and his destination. Other personnel turned back but Lance Corporal Bailey took his party forward at considerable risk, made a detour through the jungle and returned to his unit several hours later in the admin box, although he had every excuse under the circumstance for returning to a safer place. On 19 March when the enemy again attacked the box, and when they held a position on a high feature at the entrance to the east end of the box, this BOR under great personal risk rode his Motor Cycle out into the open paddy fields in view of the enemy and underfire, to inform the commander of 3 tanks to return to the box.Recommended for MM by Major Boyle APM 7 Indian Division.
