Previously served in the 4 Cheshire Regiment (TF). 31/1/1916 he enlisted as a Pte, Cheshire Regiment, No. 4100,age 21.7 years, occupation cotton operative, born Stockport, address: 47 Victory Street, Portwood, Stockport, 26/4/1915 transferred to 6 Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, No. 26475, 7/5/1918 transferred to MFP, 27/9/1919 demobilized. Attested 8/12/1915, Army Reserve 9/12/1915 to 30/1/1916, Home 31/1/1916 to 20/9/1916, BEF 21/1/1916 to 1/12/1917, Home 2/12/1917 to 19/11/1918, BEF 20/11/1918 to 29/8/1919, Home 30/8/1919 to 27/9/1919 to discharge. Between 5/12/1917 and 21/12/1917 he was in hospital suffering from gas poisoning. 3/1/1919 whilst on active service he was charged with the theft of 2 x £1 notes (English) the property of a comrade, he received a severe reprimand from Captain Nicholls, DAPM.
