Citation: | Awarded the MM serving with the Essex Regiment in the Middle East.Citation: 6025836 Pte. Calvert, Marmaduke Henry. This signaller was attached to "B" Coy. On 29 Nov when the enemy attacked with tanks and infantry & at 1700hrs over ran the left forward platoon of "B" Coy, the line to Bn HQ was cut for the 2nd time by shell fire. At this time it was of the utmost importance to maintain communications between Coy HQ and Bn HQ. Pte Calvert immediately went out and repaired the break. During the time the break was being repaired he was under continuous and heavy fire from Arty and from tanks at a range of 400 yds and bullets and splinters striking the ground all round him. Owing to this courageous act, communications were maintained, thereby enabling the defence to be successfully conducted and the Coy positions eventually to be completely re occupied.Recommended by Lt Col J S Nichols, DSO.
