Decoration Record:
Decoration: British Empire Medal (London Gazette: 42370 Page: 4170 June 10, 1961)
Citation: Queens Birthday Honours. Cyprus - MELF, MPSC Duties & Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant. 24 Mar 59 - 24 Jan 61.Citation: WOII WRIGHT was taken on strength 52 MCTC during a period when the locking up numbers were at maximum and when there was an acute staff shortage. WRIGHT who was then a S/Sgt assumed the duties of i/c discipline side in the MCTC and quickly introduced maximum unit security. A short while later the unit was called upon to become self accounting in all respects and S/Sgt WRIGHT without any previous experience voluntarily attended another unit to learn 'Q' a/c during his off duty hours and set about organising a 'Q' stores within the unit. The unit was then requested to administer the Dhekelia Area 'bunting pool' and still further the defence stores for 3 Inf Bde Gp. These extra tacks devolved on S/Sgt WRIGHT and such was the responsibility accepted by WRIGHT that a request was submitted for the grant of local WW II to maintain prestige and this was approved by the Brigade Commander. The success achieved by WO II WRIGHT has been clearly confirmed by the last two inspections by the Command Secretariat when there were no observations. The above tasks have been carried out in addition to the normal routine duties required to be performed by WRIGHT and the high standard has been achieved solely as a result of the unselfish disregard that WO II WRIGHT has shown for his own personal comfort by working long arduous hours to perform tasks above that normally performed by a person of his rank, and at the same time maintain the highest standard of efficiency in his Regt duties. That WRIGHT should voluntarily attend another unit during his off duty period to gain experience discloses high soldierly qualities and that he undertakes to perform extra duties normally reserved for a higher rank without any reward is most commendable. All these extra duties have been performed at a time when only one officer is available to the unit and fully committed with executive, administrative and Regt duties, including the maintenance of six separate accounts. Only the zeal and devotion to duty has permitted the unit to maintain a high standard of efficiency without an increase in establishment. It is considered that the loyalty to the service shown by WO II WRIGHT in the continued working of long hours 0630 -1830 most days and often till 21.30 when required, without a break for leave of absence is most deserving and strongly recommend consideration be given to his recognition.Recommended by: Capt. Commandant, 52 MCTC, Lt-Gen. GOC, Near East Land Forces.
