About forty men had assembled at a public-house, and, after drinking heavily, quarrelled. Cpl Compton on the Military Foot Police, went in with the view of restoring order, when the soldiers set upon him, and he has some difficulty in getting outside. He blew his whistle, and the guard immediately turned out and went to his assistance. The Military Police, too, from the surrounding neighbourhood quickly poured on the scene, and a fierce struggle ensued. belts being freely used. Suddenly one of the Fusiliers drew from his coat sleeve his bayonet and scabbard, and with the socket of the weapon inflicted a savage blow over the head of Compton. Blood flowed freely, and the policeman was picked up stunned and carried in a senseless condition to Coleworth Barracks. Another of the military police named Bucktrout, had his thumb bitten almost through, and the wound had to be cauterised. nine men have been placed in arrest.
