STORY OF 7 SLEEPING SOLDIERS - Told at Court Martial.
Seven soldiers serving in a special branch of the Corps of Military Police who were said to have been sound asleep by an officer in an ordnance depot at four am appeared at an Aldershot Court Martial today. One of them Private John Robert Dewey was found not guilty of sleeping at his post while acting as a sentinel, but the finding of the court on an alternative charge of conduct prejudicial to good order and military discipline by being asleep on patrol duty, will be made known later.
Captain A C Crawley said that when he visited a South Eastern Command ordnance depot at 4.10 am he was unable to attract the attention of the guard.
He rattled the main gate and found it was unlocked. On entering he discovered Dewey and two other men asleep in a car.
Dewey giving evidence admitted he was asleep. he said he could not sleep during the day because of the noise in the barracks.
Privates W J Jordan, F HJ Frampton, M Chamberlain, E G Ball, G Derry and C Newbrooke were also accused of sleeping on patrol duty and the findings in these cases ar also to be made known.
