Alfred James Braybrook. Extract from the Gloucestershire Echo, 17/6/41. MAJOR ON TRIAL. Alleged thefts from enemy aliens. Strong denials of charges of stealing 100 gold sovereigns, 1,040 razor blades and other articles belonging to enemy aliens and for fraudulently converting various sums of money totalling about £350, were made by counsel for a major of the Corps of Military Police at the Old Bailey, London, today. Accused was Major Alfred James Braybrook, 46, who was from September 1939, to January, this year commandant at internment camps in different parts of the country. It is alleged that a large quantity of stolen property was found at his house at West Wickham. Kent. Extract from Liverpool Echo, 17/4/41. INTERNED ALIENS. A German internee who was in the custody of Military Police gave evidence at Bromley, Kent, today when Major Arthur James Braybrook, aged 46, of the Corps of Military Police appeared on remand charged with stealing 100 sovereigns, two typewriters, jewellery and 1.640 safety razor blades from the inmates of camps for enemy aliens of which he had been commandant The German, Ernst Karl Ritter gave evidence concerning a typewriter said to have been found at the majors house. Ritter said that he landed in Scotland last June after escaping from Norway. Later, he had to surrender the typewriter, but did not dispose of it to anyone, and he did not see it again until it was shown to him in evidence. Extract from the Leicester Evening Mail 25/7/1941. Ex Major Robs Internees. Sentence of 18 months' imprisonment was passed by Judge Beasley at Old Bailey today on Alfred James Braybrook, aged 46, formerly a Major in the Corps of Military Police, who was yesterday found guilty of fraudulently converting £350, embezzling 100 gold sovereigns and stealing other property belonging to internees. It was alleged that Braybrook committed the offences while in charge of internees' camps. Mr Christmas Humphreys (for Braybrook) said yesterday that Braybrook had received letters written on behalf of large numbers of alien internees expressing appreciation of his conduct while they were under his charge. |
