Extract from the West London Observer, 4/1/57. Police Chief Promoted.
While congratulating him on his promotion, many people in Kensington and Hammersmith will be sorry to learn that Kensington Police Chief Mr Geoffrey I Burgess has left to take over command of T Division, with headquarters at Ealing. Mr Burgess took up his appointment as chief superintendent there on New year's Day, but he is not severing all connection with Kensington, for he will continue to live in Earls Court for the time being. He has been in Kensington station for the past seven years, and before that was at Hammersmith station for 7 1/2 years as a station inspector. During the war he served in the Suffolk Regiment and in the Corps of Military Police and was commissioned in 1944. He served in France, Belgium and Holland. He played rugger and cricket in the police and while at Kensington fostered sport at the station. The success of his interest can be gauged by the fact that the station's tug of war team became police champion for the whole of Great Britain and the basket ball team Metropolitan Police champions. Mr Burgess is a product of the famous Hendon police college where he was a student from 1937 to 1939.
