Citation: | North West Europe. Citation for BEM: Sgt Bailey came to this unit in March 1943 and was prominent in training it for service overseas. He landed in France on D+1, and at once showed standout qualities of initiative, leadership and devotion to duty. Working very long hours, frequently under shell fire and bombing, his example to and control of his Sect were beyond praise. Wounded on 9 Jul at CAEN he was eager to rejoin his Coy and was back in early Sept, in time to undertake with great success independent Pro work in advance of formations on the long march from Le Havre to Belgium, normally only done by a Pro Officer. During the last three months in Belgium and Holland he has with marked success commanded a detached sect; and, unsupervised by officers, has constantly had to act on his own. Throughout the period his quick judgement, initiative and cheerful acceptance of any duty under however great difficulties has been an inspiration to all ranks of his Coy, and has often had a steadying and encouraging effect on other troops.
