Citation: Normandy. Citation for French Croix de Guerre with Vermillion Star. On 17 July 1944 Captain J D BROWN was commanding 110 Provost Coy, whose personnel were doing Police Duties on three bridges across the river ORNE. During the night, Captain BROWN visited his posts, and, whilst visiting EUSTON Bridge, a heavy bombing attack developed, narrow misses occuring at the bridge. Captain BROWN remained on the bridge, helping the pointsman, and quickly made the traffic, which had become disorganised, run smoothly again. On three successive nights he visited his posts on the three bridges, which were under sporadic shell and mortar fire. He gave encouragment to his pointsmen, and saw that the flow of this all-important traffic was not impeded. These three bridges and the approaches were under sporadic shell fire for four days and nights, and during that time Captain BROWN was always to be found encouraging his pointsmen and ensuring the progress of the traffic.
