At the time of the commencement of the operation he was suffering from an injured eye and knee, but, on being commanded to withdraw from the party, made a special request to be allowed to carry on, which was granted. During the actual operation he sustained a wound in the upper part of his leg by a bomb splinter, and again, after receiving some medical treatment he proceeded to carry out his duties, although the wound proved very painful.
