Citation: | Italy. Citation for BEM: No5730671 Cpl Edward Charles THOMPSON has served as a section Cpl in this company since joining on the 5th December, 1943. His work during this period has at all times been of a very high standard, whether in the forward or rear areas. On various occasions he has been called upon to take over the duties of section Sgt, when his capabilities and adaptability proved themselves beyond doubt. His personal courage and efficiency, combined with calmness, has frequently been illustrated particulary during the period when the Division was in the CASSINO area, and during the advance beyond the GOTHIC LINE. On the night 14/15th December 1944 he gave an example of his reliability by leading a party from his section to the scene of a fire in CASTEL DEL RIO map ref: 008167 ITALY 1:100,000 sheet 99 FAENZA, and organised the dispersal of vehicles whilst the village was still under shellfire. His energy, efficiency, courage and enthusiasm has at all times been an example and credit to this company. By his example he has assisted in maintaining a high morale amongst all the junior NCO's, who have had the good fortune to serve under him.Capt N Bentham Cmdg 78 Div Pro Coy. Maj-Gen GOC 78 Div.
