He was conveyed to Southend General Hospital, when it was revealed that he was very serious injured. His wife and parents were sent for and arrived next day. The section was further aggravated by the sad death of Cpl Shiels and the resultant work. 23/5/44 Cpl Shield J J died this day at Southend General hospital, as a result of injuries received on 12/5/44. Next of kin were in attendance and claimed the body to take back to Leeds. 25/5/44 Attended inquest into Shiels death - accidental. This section acted as bearers of the body of Cpl Shiels when he was put on a train for burial at Leeds. It was very gratifying to learn from the Padre that he had been informed by the hospital that they had never before know a group of soldiers show such concern over a comrade as was shown by my Section for Shield before he died.
