Decoration Record:
Decoration: British Empire Medal (London Gazette: 37274 Page: 4674 Sept. 20, 1945)
Citation: Greece. Citation for BEM: During the Civil War in GREECE, December 1944 to January 1945, L/Cpl BRENNAN was stationed with his Section in PIRAEUS where it was principally engaged in the control and feeding of refugees of which there were many thousands. Throughout this period this NCO frequently displayed great initiative, energy and unlimited patience and tact in organising rations for the kitchens, assisting the aged and infirm to obtain medical treatment, arranging accommodation; and in general performing, in a highly meritorious and most praiseworthy manner, duties that were superior to those required of a junior NCO. He gave his time and energy unstintingly to the performance of these duties, the greater part of which were carried out voluntarily after he had completed tasks for which he had been detailed. His unselfish devotion to duty in extremelty trying circumstances was quite beyond praise.. He undoubtedly contributed in a large measure to the successful feeding and housing of the many refugees who locked into the area for which his Section was responsible and his work was frequently subject of favourable comments from officers of other branches and from civilian officials. Thus, he did much to enhance the prestige of his Corps in particular and the service as a whole.Maj Gen Comd 46 Div. Lt Gen Scobie Comdr Land Forces, Greece. National Archive WO 373/73.
