Extract from the Daily Mirror, 20/3/1918. THE KING AND QUEEN HAVE SENT A MESSAGE TO MRS BURGE.
About 4,000 people were present at the funeral of the famous boxer. The King and Queen have sent a message to Mrs Burge sympathising with her in her bereavement. About 4,000 people attended the funeral with military honours of the late Sergeant Dick Burge of Golders Green yesterday. Following the coffin Mr Tom MacNaughton let the sergeant's favourite dog, Betty. An escort of fifteen men was provided by Burge's late comrades of the Military Foot Police. The mourners included The Duke of Manchester, the Marquis of Queensberry, Mr Joe Elvin, Miss Marie Lloyd, Chief Inspector McBride, Lieutenants Percy Alben and E Wheatley (the well-known jockeys.) Professor Newton, Mr Ben Tillett, Mr Frank Matthew (representing the National Sporting Club), and Mr Eugene Corris. About 250 wreaths were sent.
