Citation: | The King has been graciously pleased to approve the following awards in recognition of gallant and distinguished service in Italy. No. 2660979 Guardsman Ernest Harrop Tyson, Coldstream Guards (Bury). WO 373/11. 1 Guards Bde, 6 Armd Div, 20/12/44. M. PENZOLA (0523) 1/259000 Sheet 99, IV, S W Italy. On the night of the 4/5 Dec. 44 No. 4 Coy, carried out a diversionary attack against enemy positions due NORTH of M> PENZOLA. Having completed their task they withdrew leaving behind in the darkness an Officer who had been seriously wounded. Two Gdsm remained with this Officer but he subsequently ordered them to leave him as our own D.Fs were falling in the area and they were unable to move him. On the following morning four volunteers of whom this Gdsm was one left the Bn. area in order to bring the officer back to our own position. In order to reach him they had to cross open ground in full view of the enemy which drew down heavy fire on the, On arrival they succeeded in crawling with the officer to what cover there was. here they decided that owing to the very bad ground conditions after several days of wet weather, they would be unable to carry the wounded Officer back without further help. Gdsm. Tyson therefore set off for our own lines accompanied by Gdsm. Sedman. As soon as they left cover fire was again directed at them which wounded Gdsm. Sedman in the leg. Gdsm. Tyson immediately picked him up and carried him to a house where they sheltered before continuing there journey. He carried the wounded man all the way back to our own FDLs and then having collected further help without hesitation led the new party back to the wounded officer and assisted in the task of bringing him in. Throughout the whole of this incident this Gdsm. showed a complete disregard for his own safety in crossing four times ground which he very well knew was exposed and where he knew he would draw enemy fire. As he was the only member of the original party who knew the was it was without doubt true to say that without his leadership of the second party this badly wounded officer would not have been brought back to our own lines. Signed: H R Alexander, Field Marshal. H Murray, Maj-Gen Commander 6 Armd. Div, Lt/Gen. Commander 13 Corps, Comd. 1 Guards Brigade. Lt/Col Coates, Commander 2 Coldstream Guards. |
