He enlisted in the MMP, 11/11/1915 and served with the 3 Cavalry Division. In 1917 he was selected for a commission, London Gazette 30266, page 9138, date 3 Sept, 1917, To be 2/Lt. The 'Tribune' is pleased to know that Mr. H. C. Allen, Chief Constable of Rochester has been appointed Chief Constable of Huddersfield to fill the vacancy caused by Mr. Hutchinson's appointment to the Brighton chiefship. Mr. H. C. Allen was appointed Chief Constable of Rochester in January, 1931. Prior to that appointment he was an Inspector in the Gravesend (Kent) Borough Police. Mr. Allen, who is 40 years of age and who is a nephew of Mr. Sansome of Harlesden, High Street, Nuneaton, a retired District Railway Traffic Inspector, was born at Nuneaton, Warwickshire, and is the son of a constable in the Walsall (Staffs) Borough Force, who retired in 1923. On leaving school at 13, he was employed by the Walsall Co-operative Society and rose to be branch manager. At the age of 20, however, he decided on a Police career and joining the Northampton Borough Force in July, 1914 as constable. On November 11, 1915, he volunteered for military service and was posted to the Military Mounted Police at Aldershot and served in France with that Corps, being attached to the 3red Cavalry Division until February, 1917, when he was nominated for commissioned rank. he was gazetted to the rank of Second Lieutenant in the 1/6th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment and proceeded to France, where he served with that Regiment until the end of the War. He rejoined Northampton Borough Police on January 1, 1919 and was attached to the staff of the Chief Constable's office as Constable and Assistant Chief Clerk. In December, 1920, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and in November, 1922, out of over 50 applicants, obtained the post of Clerk-sergeant in the St. Helen's County Borough Force. Whilst there he was promoted Inspector and in January 1928, out of 40 applicants,was appointed Inspector in the Gravesend Borough Force. Mr. Allen has had considerable experience, not only in Police work, but also in the duties appertaining to a fire brigade. He also holds the medallion and two certificates of the St. John Ambulance Association. He is also an expert shorthand typist. He was also drill instructor to the force at St. Helen's and on several occasions has had the honour of attending a personal escort to members of the Royal family. He has two brothers in the Police Service one, P.C. F. Allen, is in the Walsall Borough Force, while the other, P.C. G. Allen, is in the St. Helen's Borough Force.(This article has a picture of Mr. Allen.)
