Decoration Record:
Decoration: Military Medal (London Gazette: 34893 Page: 4267 July 9, 1940)
Citation: 126 Infantry Brigade. 42 Division , 1 East Lancashire Regiment . 3386381 Pte V Roberts. This soldier was a platoon orderly on the morning of the 1st June, 1940. He showed the greatest bravery in carrying numerous messages across county that was under heavy fire. Without any orders he carried ammunition to one of the forward posts. He then carried cigarettes to another and showed the stretcher bearers where they would find a wounded man. He carried Very Lights from one of the forward posts and was responsible for keeping up the morale both of his own platoon and in the Company. To stress the great disregard for his own personal safety, I feel that I must mention that the ground over this young soldier was operating was considered as being covered by the most deadly snipers. On previous occasions I understand that nearly every man who was on this particular ground had become a casualty and Pte. Roberts was fully aware of this fact. Recommended by:- Brig. E G Miller, MM, Commander 126 Inf. Bde. Maj/Gen. W. G. Holmes, Commander 42 Inf Div. MM 11/7/40.
