| Citation: | 479 - ACT OF GALLANTRY The name of No. 6909100 Bugler W E Phippen, 2 Rifle Brigade has been brought to the notice for the following act of gallantry:- On the evening of July 5th, a fire broke out on the premises of Mr. Mellon of Strabane. The fire had got a firm hold on the building, when it was found that a four years old child was still upstairs. No. 6909100 Bugler W e Phippen, climbed to the upper floor by means of a rafter, as the staircase was burning and succeeded in fighting his way through the flames to where the child was, whom he carried to safety". The child would undoutably have lost her life but for the gallant action of Bugler Phippen. The General Officer Commanding in Chief congratulates Bugler Phippen on his very gallant conduct and directs that the usual entry be made in the documents of this soldier, in accordance with King's Regulations, para, 1919, Bugler Phippen's action is being brought to the notice of the Royal Humane Society.
