He volunteered in October 1914 and was quickly sent to France where he was engaged on important traffic control and other police duties at Le Havre and Rouen. He did excellent work until January 1917 when he was discharged as medically unfit for further service as a result of influenza. He holds the 1914 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals.
