FUNERAL OF CRIMEAN VETERAN.
The funeral took place at Guildford Cemetery on Saturday of Mr. James Backhurst, who died the previous Monday at the age of 83. The deceased came to Guildford as a boy of 13 and afterwards joined the old Royal Surrey Militia. He was called up during the Crimea war and went through that campaign unwounded. For 26 years he was in the employ of Messrs. John Moon and Son, timber merchants and for about a similar period worked for the late Mr. Lethbridge, coal merchant. His son Charles, who served in the Boer War, came over for the funeral from France, where he is serving in the Military Mounted Police. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. J. H. K. Percy. The principal mourners were Fan (daughter), Charles (son), Annie (niece), Will (brother in Law, Mr. Arthur Rofell (son in law). Mrs. Rogers (sister in law), Mrs. Teague and Miss Ward. There was a number of floral tributes.
